Where To Eat in Hong Kong?

Bello peeps, a month ago I went for a short trip to Hong Kong with Daniel and we had many crazy food over there. So today, I am gonna share some reviews of those crazy food we have tasted.

As we all know, Hong Kong is like one of the must-go countries when it comes to hunting asian food. Even before this trip, I have seen lots of different blog posts stating where and what to eat. I gotta be honest, some are pretty delicious that I would say it's a must try.. but there are also a few restaurants that disappoint me. Therefore, I will be rating these food below (based on my personal opinion), let's see which one is a YAY and NAY.

1. 富豪雪糕车 (Mister Softee Ice Cream)

The very first thing that I ate once I settled down with my room and baggages was this roadside ice-cream, that can be found in many places around Hong Kong. Daniel was actually the one who introduced me to this ice-cream truck... he had it few years back during his family trip to Hong Kong and he kinda fell for it. We bumped into one at Tsim Sha Tsui, near the Star Ferry Pier.

The truck sells a few different products but I have seen everyone getting this vanilla flavoured ice-cream that costs around HKD 10 per cone, seems like it is the best seller. All I can say is that the ice cream is really milky with a truly soft texture.

2. Tai Cheong Bakery (泰昌饼家)

We all know that in Hong Kong it is quite well-known that the number of cha chaan teng (aka tea restaurants) available is almost uncountable, but actually their bakeries are as crazy too. Tai Cheong is a local bakery brand with many branches around Kowloon, Central and Wan Chai area. The brand has more than 60 years of establishment and it's famous for its egg tarts and donuts.

3. DimDimSum Dim Sum Specialty Store (點點心)

Dimsum is a must eat in Hong Kong! And out of so many choices, we decided to try it at DimDimSum, Jordan. I gotta be honest, I am not fan of Hong Kong style dimsum because they don't serve steamed fishball (which I LOVE!). But the crystal shrimp and pork dumplings (蝦餃燒賣) were satisfying... I love the Piggy Custard Buns too. Overall we spent about HKD140 for five dishes and 2 cups of tea. Great experience we had, good ambience.

4. Lan Fong Yuen (蘭芳園)

Alright, finally it's about the old famous cha chaan teng of Hong Kong. According to many online reviews, Lan Fang Yuen is one of the pioneers of Hong Kong milk tea and also one of the oldest cha chaan teng. It's mainly famous for Pork Chop Bun, French toast and milk tea. Maybe I am just not good at drinking Hong Kong milk tea, I don't find it very impressive. But I do love its French Toast and Pork Chop Bun. Prices are all reasonable, we spent about HKD 70 for two pax.

5. Sing Heung Yuen (勝香園)

Sing Heung Yuen, a large stall by the roadside is well-known for their tomato soup served with a choice of noodle or macaroni. You can also pick what you want to come as the sides like sausages, pork cubes, luncheon meat, ham, egg and etc. On average each bowl of noodle costs around HKD 45. Honestly, this is like one of my favourite food throughout my trip. We queued for 30 minutes with no regrets. Try their crispy toasts too if you decide to give it a visit!

6. Mak’s Noodle (麥奀雲吞麵世家)

Being one of the best wonton noodle houses in Hong Kong, Mak's Noodle serves various wonton noodles ranging from HKD 40 to HKD 56 per bowl. The choices including shrimp wonton, pork dumpling, beef brisket and beef tendon. Other than wonton noodles, you can also find some other dishes in store, such as stirred noodles, dried shrimp roe broth and vegetables w/ oyster sauce. The wonton noodle size is quite small, for big eaters, it may not be enough. I think I love its well renovated interior more than the food hehe (the interior is considered lavish for a shoplot restaurant in Hong Kong).

7. Kam Wah Cafe (金冰廳)

It's all about pineapple bun, egg tarts, toasts and milk tea here in Kam Wah Cafe. Kam Wah Cafe is a very famous Hong Kong cha chaan teng, well-known for their 菠蘿包(pineapple bun w/o butter) or 菠蘿油(pineapple bun w/ butter)! You will find the cafe literally flooded with people inside and outside buying their pineapple buns. I love their 菠蘿油, decent enough.... while the egg tarts, hmmm I think there are many better choices outside. Not sure if there's a minimum spending, but the waitress encourages every customer to order at least one drink and a dish. Total amount spent for 2 buns, 2 drinks and 2 tarts was around HKD 70 to HKD 80.

8. Australian Dairy Company (澳洲牛奶公司)

This cha chaan teng is a really crazy one! They start operating early in the morning, around 7:30am to 11:00pm everyday except for Thursday and they are really famous for scrambled eggs with toast, steam milk and macaroni with ham. We were there around 10:00am and wow queue was crazy long!

To be honest, I really hate this restaurant a lot because they have the shittiest services on earth.
The waiter would scold you for slow ordering pace, and if you don't order enough, they will strike a very nasty look at you the whole time. I felt really stressful eating there and I hardly enjoyed what I was tasting.

So sorry that I couldn't help much on the menu, I took no picture in the restaurant as we were only there for less than 30 minutes. I would recommend to just go for the set menu as it comes with the 2 main things you must not miss, the toast and the macaroni. There are 3 different sets (breakfast, lunch and dinner), so order according to the time you visit. Average price per set is HKD 45.

It's saddening how they serve such good scrambled eggs but the services scare people off. GOOD LUCK PEEPS and let's hope you don't get scolded when you visit it!

9. Paisano's Pizzeria

In case you're craving for pizza during the trip and not sure where to get a good one, come to Paisano's Pizzeria for some mega pizza. We just got out of the Wan Chai mrt station exit A5 and discovered this shop with many locals and angmohs queueing up, so we decided to give it a try. The crust, taste, and filling were all fine, definitely a good pizza with generous amount of fillings. Price range is around HKD 30 to HKD 60 per piece.

10. Ichiran 天然豚骨拉麵專門店一蘭

I know, we were in Hong Kong but we hunted for Japanese restaurant instead haha. I wasn't sure what really so special about this ramen restaurant at first, until I tried it personally. Ichiran consists of this one-person-seat booth concept, which allows people to sit separately and solely enjoy your ramen during the visit. It's quite rare to have restaurant like this in Hong Kong, thus the queue can be a lil long. Anyway, I think it's a good idea to give it a try... because in Hong Kong, most of the time you gotta share table with other customers or encounter rude waiter/waitress, so at least this is the place where you can enjoy a chilly time and good ramen.

OH YEAH, you can actually customize your own ramen by selecting the amount of spice, onion, seasoning and richness you want. Side dishes like eggs & kikurage mushroom are available too!
Prices are slightly higher here, about HKD 240 for two bowls of ramen.

11. Sun Kee (新記芝士麵)

This restaurant is like a hidden gem in Tsim Sha Tsui, as it is located in a small building called Champagne Court. You really gotta walk all the way in from the main entrance of the building to find the restaurant. Sun Kee sells mainly cheese noodles with pork cheek and eggs. The sauce was quite thick and cheesy, I could barely finish a bowl. Can't tell if I like it or not but if you're a cheese lover, feel free to try... prices range from HKD 44 to HKD 58 per bowl.

12. Delicious Kitchen 美味廚

Delicious Kitchen is located at the side of this beautiful cafe area in Causeway Bay. It's a middle range Chinese restaurant providing various choices of rice, dishes and noodles. There was nothing much about it, just that Daniel found this restaurant during our prep of the trip itinerary, and thought it would be a good place to dine in. We tried their steamed rice with pork rib (HKD 53), noodles with spareribs (HKD 59) and hot & sour soup (HKD 80). Pork ribs were all good.

13. Mammy Pancake (媽咪雞蛋仔)

Out of all the egg waffles I have tasted, this would be the BEST one! No joke.. the entire egg waffle felt so solid with crazy fillings in each of the puffs. You can really tell that it's good by just looking at the queue (I was there at 10:00pm on weekday and still flooded with people).

I tried the sweet potato flavour and wow very generous amount of potato in it. They have more than 15 choices of flavours in-store and all are below HKD 30. Yup, it is a lil pricey compared to many other egg waffle stalls... but I would rather have this one.
